  1. For Modern Language Association (MLA) papers, use 8½ X 11 inch paper. There’s no need for colored paper, and if for any reason the paper has frills along the side, remove it. Don’t put the paper in a binder, and either paper clip of staple the paper in the extreme upper left hand corner.
  2. Essays written for essential knowledge (EK) or other formal work do not require a title page, unless you’re told otherwise. The header should be on the left hand side, following the model above, unless instructed otherwise. Everything on the paper is double-spaced. Capitalize the first and last words of the title and all other words except articles, prepositions, and conjunctions.
  3. Margins should be at least one inch but no more than an inch and half on all sides of the paper. Do not justify the right hand margin (unless instructed otherwise.) Indent each paragraph with one hit of the tab key, or five spaces. For quotations longer than four typed lines of prose or three of poetry, indent two tab keys or ten spaces. Paper should be printed single-sided only.
  4. Number all pages at the upper right hand corner or bottom right in the footer, a half-inch below the top edge. If the instructor has asked for a separate title page, the title page is uncounted and unnumbered. Use Arabic numerals and do not enclose the number in parentheses or use a comma.
  5. Citations are in-text­, focusing on the author’s last name and the page number of the source (Hackler 23). The period goes after the source, and is linked to a Works Cited Page.
  6. Fonts should be limited to readable, serif fonts (Garamond, Palatino, Times New Roman, Baskerville, and ideally the MC2 official type-face, Gill Sans) and no smaller than 10pt and no larger than 12pt. This includes the title, which is not bold, large, or in a different typeface from the paper.
